Won't Quit the Jibber Jabber

The Invasion Of…something new?

So I thought I was going to see The Libertines. Started freaking out and squawking at everyone about my excitement. I didn’t. It was all miscommunication…However, the time will come and i’ll get a shot of the old Pete and Carl Bromance that used to linger on stage.

I did however see The Invasion Of. I’ve seen them once before, but you can’t really count the last 20 minutes of a gig as a proper viewing.

Some backround

When you do start to hear about The Invasion Of (allow repeatedly typing out long things, T.I.O for now) they’ll constantly be referred to as “Gary Powell’s band, you know? The sick drummer from The Libertines?” like with The Babyshambles and The Dirty Pretty Things…

Question is, have they earned the right to be a band – and a good band at that, without this constant reference? I reckon so. Fair enough, so right now my favourite track by them is Delusional, with the sweetest drum solos being rolled out by Powell, but  it’s the fact that it all works well together and obviously he’s not carrying them and nor is his name.

They’ve got this Post-Libertines sound but it’s but it’s not like looking back 5 or 6 years. They’ve mixed it up in terms of genre and style and added an edge I can’t quite put my finger on.

I was going to link a video of their first gig at Water Rats from back in October sometime but the sound quality isnt great, so here’s their Myspace. The tracks are cut short, but I guess that’s all the more reason to go see what they’re about.

If you’re special enough to have gotten yourself a Reading or Leeds ticket, you can catch them there.

Excuse me for the not so great pictures, I’ll upload some by Caz later. But for now you’ll have to cope with my shaky handywork and random editing skills.

Oh also, venue was Proud Galleries in Camden Stables. Been meaning to check it out for a few years and will very probably go back again. Although a double gin and ginger beer (not for me) and a bottle of Becks (for me) set me back £12…ooof steep! I don’t even want to think about how that was caculated.
